Dr. Daniel Jones (R&D Director Revive Active Products) has compiled a list of quick tips to help you ward off illness this flu season and help ensure optimal immune system function.
1. Eat a well-balanced diet
The immune system depends on many vitamins and minerals for optimal function. During colder winter months we experience conditions exerted on us which induce physiological changes with our bodies much different from summer months. Simply put, in the cold things contract and slow down. Many people would be aware of the importance of immune system support during this period with nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin D.
2. Get adequate sleep
Major sleep disruptions (getting three hours less than normal) have been linked to immune suppression. While there is no magic number, Dr. Jones suggests that adults should get 7 to 8 hours per night (the amount of sleep our bodies need for optimal performance). Getting enough rest also allows you to deal more effectively with stress. When our body is lacking sleep, it enters a state of stress. Body functions are on high alert. This increases blood pressure and causes the production of stress hormones. Stress hormones then, in turn, make it harder for us to fall asleep, while higher blood pressure, as mentioned above, increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. By getting a good night’s sleep we can break the circle of stress and counteract its effects on our body.
3. Manage your stress levels
The body’s antioxidants include enzymes, like coenzyme Q10, as well as vitamins and minerals manufactured or obtained from the diet.
Chronic stress has been linked to suppression of immune system function. In the time-pressured, hectic environments that many of us live, developing effective stress management strategies and techniques can go a long way in helping us stay healthy during cold and flu season.
Antioxidants. Free radicals are scavenger molecules produced naturally during metabolism, which are harmful to the body and can cause cellular damage as well as the hardening of blood vessels. Antioxidants act to neutralize free radicals protecting us from their damaging effects keeping cells and blood vessels healthy. Exercise can help to reduce anxiety, induce relaxation, make you feel better about yourself and also encourage the adoption of other healthy behaviours. 20 minutes exercise a day helps increase immunity, increase energy and a positive outlook. Activities such as yoga, meditation, deep-breathing and tai-chi are other documented ways to relax and reduce stress.
