The physiological system should be thought of not as linear, but a network. When one component is altered, a knock-on effect is observed and can lead to serious consequences.
When we think of health and well being, two core issues are energy and circulation. Research shows that oxidative stress can be a primary driver in the decline of both energy and circulation resulting in fatigue and overall decreased quality of life.
What is CoQ10?
Dr. Frederick Crane first isolated coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) from within the heart muscle in 1957. CoQ10 is found in high concentrations within the heart, liver and lungs due to the high energy requirements of these organs. However, it was in 1978 when the importance of CoQ10 was really established when Peter Mitchell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research into CoQ10 and its cellular energy producing mechanism.
CoQ10 is a natural energy generating molecule with antioxidant properties. CoQ10 is essential in the production of ATP within every cell throughout the body providing cellular and whole body energy. Levels of CoQ10 have been shown to decline with age and has been associated with increased fatigue. Furthermore, dysregulation of the energy generation cycle results in dysfunction causing the over production of harmful free radicals in the presence of low CoQ10 antioxidant concentrations. Research is shown that increased oxidative stress which can cause the hardening of blood vessels reducing circulation.
Reduced circulation is a condition resulting in reduced oxygen and nutrient transport and significant increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Since the blood vessel walls are the first barrier of the cardiovascular system, they are particularly susceptible to damage by harmful free radicals with oxidative stress. Research shows L-arginine is an important amino acid in the production of nitric oxide (NO), which helps blood vessels to relax and expand increasing circulation. L-arginine supplementation has been shown to increase the production of NO therefore increasing circulation and thus reducing cardiovascular risk.
Considering the connections between mitochondrial function, energy production, oxidative stress, antioxidants and circulation, it is important to address these issues together when considering nutritional therapy. With the energy boosting and antioxidant protective effects of coQ10 in conjunction with the widening of blood vessels and circulation enhancing effects of L-arginine, it is clear the beneficial effects of these powerful nutritional supplements in the regulation on a healthy physiological network.
